No formatting, so paste characters

Threads keeps its composer simple: text, links, mentions, topic tags, images and polls. There’s no bold, no italic and no strikethrough, and typing ~~text~~ posts the tildes as they are. What Threads does display is any Unicode character, so the version above, your text with a combining long stroke (U+0336) after every letter, comes through with its line intact.

Fitting it in 500 characters

A Threads post can be 500 characters, which is roomy until you strike things through. Every struck letter is two characters, the letter and its mark:

  • Posting every day is 17 characters plain, 34 struck.
  • A 300-character post struck end to end would come to about 600 and wouldn’t fit.

Select Threads under Posting to and the counter warns you before you go over. Most people strike one or two words anyway. That’s where the joke is.

Your Threads bio and name

Threads borrows your profile from Instagram but lets you edit the bio separately, with a 150-character limit. Strikethrough works in both the bio and your display name. It doesn’t work in the username, which stays tied to Instagram’s rules.

Place Strikethrough? Limit
Posts and replies Yes 500
Bio Yes 150
Name Yes Shared with Instagram
Username No Letters, numbers, . and _

Good uses on Threads

  • Corrections without deleting: strike the wrong figure and put the right one after it, so replies still make sense.
  • Running jokes: “Day 3 of posting every day posting most days.”
  • Price drops: $60 $45, which pairs well with the sale price generator.

Check how it reads

The line is drawn by whatever font the reader’s phone uses. On most iPhones and recent Android phones it’s continuous. A few older Android fonts leave small gaps between letters. The text is the same either way. Screen readers may read each mark aloud, so don’t strike anything a reader needs to understand.

Posting the same text to Bluesky and X

Bluesky counts what you see, so the same struck text costs half as much there; see the Bluesky guide. X is stricter at 280. Pick each platform under Posting to before you cross-post.

Questions people ask

How do you strikethrough on Threads?

Threads has no strikethrough button or Markdown, so copy the struck-through text from the tool above and paste it into your post. The line is built from Unicode characters, so it appears for everyone in the app and on threads.net.

Can you bold or italicize text on Threads?

Not with formatting. The same Unicode trick works for bold and italic letters, which are separate characters in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block. The bold and italic generator makes them, and the Markdown formatter converts **bold** and ~~strike~~ markup in one go.

Does strikethrough count against the 500-character limit?

Yes. Each struck letter carries an extra mark, so it counts about twice. Pick Threads under Posting to and the tool shows how much of the 500 you are using. Turning off the line through spaces saves a little.

Can I put strikethrough in my Threads username?

No. Your Threads username is your Instagram username, which only allows letters, numbers, full stops and underscores. Your name and bio take Unicode, so the line works there.
