LinkedIn, copy and paste

Strikethrough text for LinkedIn use it like a professional

LinkedIn posts don’t support formatting, so strikethrough has to be pasted in as Unicode. It works, but use it carefully: recruiters search your profile word by word.

Why posts need the copy-and-paste version

The LinkedIn post editor has no text formatting: no bold, no italic, no strikethrough. Text pasted from a document loses its styling. So the strikethrough you see in LinkedIn posts is Unicode: the letters plus a combining line mark after each one. It displays in the feed, on mobile and in notifications, because LinkedIn treats it as ordinary text.

How people use it well

The reframe. “My goal this year: get promoted learn something every week.” The struck phrase is the old way of thinking, the plain phrase is the point of the post.

Corrections. Editing a post to strike a wrong figure and add the right one is more honest than silently changing it under existing comments.

Event updates. A struck date or venue followed by the new one.

In each case it’s one phrase, used once. A post where every other line is struck through is hard to read and reads as gimmicky.

Where to keep it out

Headline and job titles. LinkedIn search, and the recruiter tools built on it, match the words in your headline, current title and skills. Struck-through words don’t match. If your headline says Designer Product Lead, you’ll show up for “product lead” but not “designer”, which may be exactly what you want, or not.

Skills and company names. These are linked to LinkedIn’s own lists, so styled text won’t connect to anything.

Anything someone needs to understand. Some screen readers announce each combining mark, so struck text can become a long string of noise. Keep the meaning of a post in plain words.

Length

Posts allow 3,000 characters and the headline 220, so length is rarely an issue for a word or two. Each struck letter counts double, though, so a fully struck paragraph will eat into the limit. The counter above shows exactly how much.

Taking it back out

To remove struck text from a post or your profile, copy it, run it through the remove formatting tool and paste the plain version back.

Questions people ask

How do I strikethrough text on LinkedIn?

Type the words you want to strike above, copy the strikethrough result, and paste it into your LinkedIn post, comment or profile. LinkedIn has no formatting buttons for posts, so Unicode is the only way.

Is it professional to use strikethrough on LinkedIn?

In moderation. A single struck word in a post, used for a correction or a light joke, reads as personality. Struck text in your headline or experience is riskier, because it confuses search and screen readers.

Will strikethrough text affect LinkedIn search?

Yes. Struck words are made of different characters from plain words, so LinkedIn search will not match them. If "Product Manager" is struck through in your headline, recruiters searching for product managers will not find you by those words.
