Mac shortcuts on Windows and Mac
Strikethrough shortcut on Mac ⌘ + Shift + X
In most Mac apps the strikethrough shortcut is Command + Shift + X. Notion is the main exception, and Apple’s own apps have no shortcut until you make one.

The shortcut, app by app
| App | Shortcut on Mac |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Word | ⌘ + Shift + X |
| Microsoft Excel | ⌘ + Shift + X |
| Microsoft PowerPoint | ⌘ + Shift + X in recent versions |
| Google Docs, Sheets, Slides | ⌘ + Shift + X |
| Slack | ⌘ + Shift + X |
| Telegram for Mac | ⌘ + Shift + X |
| Notion | ⌘ + Shift + S |
| Pages, Keynote, Numbers | none: Format → Font → Strikethrough |
| Apple Notes | none: Format → Font → Strikethrough |
| Discord | none: type ~~text~~ |
none: type ~text~ |
Every one of these is a toggle. Select struck text and press the same keys to take the line off.
Make your own shortcut for Apple’s apps
Pages, Keynote, Numbers and Notes all have strikethrough in their menus but no key for it. macOS lets you add one to any menu item:
- Open System Settings → Keyboard, then click Keyboard Shortcuts.
- Choose App Shortcuts and click +.
- Pick the app, for example Pages, or leave it as All Applications.
- In Menu title, type Strikethrough exactly, with a capital S.
- Click in Keyboard shortcut and press ⌘ + Shift + X, so it matches every other app.
- Click Done and restart the app.
If the shortcut doesn’t fire, the menu title doesn’t match. Open the app’s Format → Font menu and copy the wording exactly.
Using All Applications is tempting, but apps that already use ⌘ + Shift + X for something else will have it overridden. Adding the shortcut app by app is safer.
Microsoft Word on Mac has a few extras
Word’s Font dialog (⌘ + D) also has Double strikethrough. For a strikethrough you can see in Track Changes instead, turn on Review → Track Changes and delete the text: Word shows it struck through in a reviewer colour until you accept the change.
When there’s no formatting at all
Shortcuts only work in apps that support formatted text. In Instagram, TikTok, X, file names, Terminal or a social bio, there’s nothing to press. Use the copy-paste version on this page instead: it puts the line into the characters, so it pastes anywhere on your Mac and shows up for everyone who reads it.
You can also save a struck phrase you use often with System Settings → Keyboard → Text Replacements. Paste the struck text as the replacement and give it a short trigger like ;old.

Questions people ask
What is the strikethrough shortcut on a Mac?
Command + Shift + X in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, Slack and Telegram. Notion uses Command + Shift + S. Pages, Keynote, Numbers and Notes have no default shortcut.
How do I add a strikethrough shortcut to Pages or Notes?
Open System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, App Shortcuts. Click +, choose the app, type Strikethrough exactly as it appears in the app’s Format menu, and press the keys you want, such as Command + Shift + X.
Why does Command + Shift + X not work?
Either the app uses a different shortcut (Notion uses Command + Shift + S), it has none (Pages, Notes, TextEdit), or another app or a custom shortcut has claimed the same keys. Try the Format menu to confirm the app supports strikethrough at all.
Is there a strikethrough shortcut in Discord or WhatsApp on Mac?
No key shortcut. Type the markup instead: two tildes each side in Discord (~~text~~) and one each side in WhatsApp (~text~).
