Why fancy text isnโ€™t really a font

A font changes how a letter is drawn. These styles donโ€™t do that: they swap each letter for a different character that happens to look like a styled letter. Unicode includes complete bold, italic, script, fraktur and double-struck alphabets for mathematicians, who need ๐ฑ and ๐‘ฅ to mean different things in a formula. Copy-and-paste font sites borrow those alphabets for decoration.

Thatโ€™s why the style survives being pasted into an Instagram bio, and also why it causes trouble afterwards. The text canโ€™t be searched, is often read aloud badly by screen readers, and wonโ€™t take a real font when you paste it into a document.

What gets converted

Style Example Unicode block
Bold, italic, bold italic ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ ๐ผ๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘ฉ๐’๐’•๐’‰ Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols
Script, fraktur, double-struck ๐’ฎ๐’ธ๐“‡๐’พ๐“…๐“‰ ๐”Š๐”ฌ๐”ฑ๐”ฅ๐”ฆ๐”  ๐”ป๐• ๐•ฆ๐•“๐•๐•– the same, plus Letterlike Symbols for gaps like โ„ฌ and โ„ญ
Sans and monospace ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐š–๐š˜๐š—๐š˜ Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols
Bubble and squared โ“‘โ“คโ“‘โ“‘โ“›โ“” ๐Ÿ…‘๐Ÿ…ค๐Ÿ…‘๐Ÿ…‘๐Ÿ…›๐Ÿ…” ๐Ÿ…‚๐Ÿ…€๐Ÿ…„๐Ÿ„ฐ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ„ด Enclosed Alphanumerics and its supplement
Wide (vaporwave) ๏ฝ—๏ฝ‰๏ฝ„๏ฝ…ใ€€๏ฝ”๏ฝ…๏ฝ˜๏ฝ” Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms
Small caps, superscript ๊œฑแดแด€สŸสŸ แถœแตƒแต–หข IPA and phonetic extensions

Lines and glitch sฬถtฬถrฬถuฬถcฬถkฬถ uฬฒnฬฒdฬฒeฬฒrฬฒ zฬทฬขaฬธlฬถgฬตoฬถ Combining marks

Filled bubble and squared letters only exist as capitals in Unicode, so ๐Ÿ…‘๐Ÿ…ค๐Ÿ…‘๐Ÿ…‘๐Ÿ…›๐Ÿ…” comes back as BUBBLE. Everything else keeps its case.

What it leaves alone

Normalisation is a blunt tool. Applied to a whole text it also rewrites characters you probably want to keep: ยฝ becomes 1โ„2, โ„ข becomes TM, the ligature ๏ฌ splits into f and i, and ยฒ turns into a plain 2. This converter only touches characters from the blocks above, so prices, trademarks, footnote numbers and accents like รฉ pass through unchanged.

Two exceptions are worth knowing. Superscript and subscript letters are converted, because theyโ€™re one of the styles this site makes, so xยฒ comes back as x2. And look-alike letters from other alphabets (Cyrillic ะฐ, Greek ฮฟ) are left as they are, because theyโ€™re real letters in real languages.

When you need it

  • Quoting a post. You want to paste someoneโ€™s ๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐ LinkedIn headline into a report or an email without the maths characters.
  • Cleaning a bio or a display name so it can be searched, sorted or put in a spreadsheet.
  • Accessibility. Swap styled text for plain before publishing, so screen readers read words instead of โ€œmathematical bold capital Bโ€.
  • Fixing a document. Text pasted from social media wonโ€™t take your heading font until itโ€™s plain again.

Going the other way

This site makes several of these styles, each with honest notes about where they work: small caps, superscript, strikethrough and zalgo. For glitch text only, remove zalgo text explains how accents survive the cleanup.

Questions people ask

Why canโ€™t I search or select fancy text like normal text?

Because it isnโ€™t normal text in a different font. ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ is made of characters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, which computers treat as maths symbols, not as the letters B, o, l, d. Search boxes, spell checkers and screen readers see symbols, so they donโ€™t match.

Which styles can this convert?

Bold, italic and bold italic in serif and sans, script and bold script, fraktur (gothic), double-struck, monospace, bubble letters filled and outlined, squared and negative squared letters, parenthesized letters, fullwidth (vaporwave) text, regional-indicator emoji letters, small caps, superscript, subscript, plus strikethrough, underline, slash and zalgo marks.

How do I turn LinkedIn or Instagram bold text back to plain text?

Copy the post text, paste it into the box above, and copy the plain result. LinkedIn and Instagram have no real bold, so the bold you see in posts is always these special characters, and this converts them.

Why doesnโ€™t small caps or upside-down text convert in other tools?

Most converters lean on Unicode normalisation (NFKC), which knows that ๐š is an a but has no rule for small caps like แด€, which are separate phonetic letters. This tool adds its own tables for small caps, superscript and the filled bubble letters. Upside-down text is still not converted here.

Will it change fractions, โ„ข or ligatures in my text?

No. Plain normalisation would turn ยฝ into 1โ„2, โ„ข into TM and ๏ฌ into fi. This tool only converts characters from the fancy-letter blocks, so the rest of your text comes out exactly as it went in.
