How this works
A slash through a letter comes from the same family of Unicode marks as strikethrough. Instead of a horizontal line, U+0337 adds a short diagonal stroke and U+0338 a long one. Placed after every character, they turn a word into a row of crossed-out letters: n̷o̷.
The tool also shows the regular strikethrough styles, so you can compare them side by side before you copy.
When a slash beats a straight line
A horizontal strike says “I changed my mind”. A slash says “this is cancelled” or “absolutely not”. It’s the same visual language as a no-entry sign, which is why slashed words read as a refusal rather than an edit.
Good uses:
- Refusals and jokes. “Mondays? n̷o̷p̷e̷”
- Cancelled plans. A struck-out event in a channel topic or a status message.
- Decoration. A slashed name in a gaming handle or a server name, used sparingly.
Readability
Slashes are heavier than a straight line, and the long version can touch neighbouring letters. Keep it to a word or two. A whole slashed sentence is hard to read, and in a small font it can look like a rendering error.
The usual Unicode caveats apply. Each letter becomes two characters, so it counts double towards length limits. Screen readers may read every slash out loud or skip the word. And search won’t match slashed text, so don’t use it for anything you want people to find, like a hashtag or a product name.
Taking the slashes out again
If you’ve pasted slash text somewhere and want the plain words back, run it through the remove formatting tool. It strips every line, slash and underline mark this site produces and leaves accents and emoji alone.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between the short and long slash?
The short slash (U+0337) cuts through the middle of each letter. The long slash (U+0338) is the mark used to build symbols like ≠, so it runs the full height of the letter and can collide with the letters next to it.
Does slash text work on every phone?
It is plain Unicode, so it displays on every modern phone and computer. How it looks depends on the font: some draw the slash steeper or longer than others.
Can I use slash text in a username?
Only where the username field accepts symbols. Display names on X, Discord and TikTok usually do. Handles that only allow letters, numbers and underscores, like Instagram usernames, will reject it.
