Strikethrough text for Snapchat chats, captions, profile

Snapchat has no formatting tools, so paste strikethrough in as Unicode. Test it in a chat with yourself first; caption fonts can draw the line differently.

How it works

Snapchat doesn’t do bold, italic or strikethrough. What it does do is display any Unicode character your phone can draw, and strikethrough can be built from Unicode: each letter followed by U+0336, a combining long stroke, so the strokes join into a line.

Copy the result above, open Snapchat, and paste it into a chat or the caption bar on a Snap.

Chats

Chat messages use your phone’s system font, the same one this page uses for the preview, so what you see above is close to what your friend will see. The line looks cleanest here.

Struck-through text works the way it does elsewhere: a joke correction, a changed plan, a reveal.

Captions and Stories

The caption bar on a Snap uses Snapchat’s own fonts and styles. Combining marks usually display, but the line can sit higher or lower than the middle of the letters, or break between some letters, depending on the caption style and your phone.

Before you post to a Story:

  1. Paste the text into a Snap caption.
  2. Try a couple of caption styles. The plain style usually renders combining marks best.
  3. Save the Snap to Memories instead of sending, and look at it full screen.

If the line is badly placed in every style, strike a single short word. It hides the problem better than a long phrase does.

Length and readability

Each struck letter counts as two characters, and Snap captions are short, so keep it to a word or two. Captions also disappear fast. Struck text takes longer to read, which is another reason to keep it brief.

Removing it

If you’ve saved struck text in a profile field and want it gone, copy it, paste it into the remove formatting tool and use the plain result.

Questions people ask

Can you strikethrough text on Snapchat?

Not with a button or code. Snapchat has no text formatting, but it displays Unicode characters, so you can copy the strikethrough version above and paste it into a chat or a caption.

Why does my strikethrough look strange in a Snap caption?

Caption styles use Snapchat’s own fonts, and some of them position combining marks oddly or leave gaps. The plain caption style usually draws the line best. Chat messages use the phone’s system font and look the cleanest.

Can I use strikethrough in my Snapchat display name?

Snapchat restricts which characters display names can contain, and it may reject decorative marks. Try it; if Snapchat refuses the name, there is no workaround.
