Why you need a generator for Instagram
Instagram doesn’t support bold, italic or strikethrough anywhere: not in captions, not in bios, not in comments. Copy a struck-through line from Notes or Google Docs and Instagram drops the formatting on paste.
Unicode gets around this. The strikethrough you copy above isn’t formatting. It’s the letters themselves plus a combining line mark after each one. Instagram treats it as ordinary text, so the line survives.
Using it in your bio
The bio is where strikethrough earns its keep: a crossed-out job title with the real one after it, a joke correction, a former name.
- Type the words you want crossed out in the box above. Only those words, not your whole bio.
- Select Instagram under Posting to to see how many of your 150 characters it uses.
- Copy the strikethrough result.
- In Instagram, go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then Bio, and paste it where you want it.
Strikethrough doubles the character count of every letter it covers, so a whole struck-through bio burns through the limit fast. One or two struck words read better anyway.
Captions and comments
Captions allow 2,200 characters, so length is rarely a problem there. Strikethrough works well for before-and-after posts ($80 $45), corrections and running jokes. In comments, it reads as a wink.
Threads
Threads posts are plain text too, so the same copy-paste approach works there. Your Threads profile shares its name and bio with Instagram, so strikethrough you add to your Instagram bio can show up on Threads as well.
Things to keep plain
Hashtags. A struck-through hashtag isn’t a hashtag. Instagram won’t link it or index it.
Keywords in your Name field. The Name field is searchable. If your name is “Ana | Ceramics”, people searching ceramics can find you. “Ana | C̶e̶r̶a̶m̶i̶c̶s̶” they can’t.
Anything important. Screen readers handle combining marks inconsistently, and some read every mark aloud. Don’t put contact details or opening hours in strikethrough.
What it looks like for your followers
The line is drawn by the phone’s own font. On iPhone and most Android phones it’s a clean line through the middle of the letters. On a few older Android fonts the segments don’t quite meet. The text is still the same; only the drawing differs.
Questions people ask
How do I get strikethrough text on Instagram?
Type your text in the box above, copy the strikethrough result and paste it into Instagram. It works in your bio, captions, comments and DMs because the line is part of the text itself, not formatting.
Why does strikethrough take up so much of my bio?
Each struck-through letter is two characters: the letter and an invisible line mark. A 40-letter phrase uses 80 of your 150 characters. Strike just the word that matters and leave the rest plain.
Can I use strikethrough in my Instagram username?
No. Instagram usernames only accept letters, numbers, periods and underscores. You can use it in your Name field, which appears in bold above your bio and is also searchable.
Will strikethrough text hurt my reach?
Instagram search matches plain words. If you strike through a keyword or hashtag, people searching for it will not find you through that word. Keep keywords and hashtags plain.
