How this works

Each lowercase letter is swapped for its small capital in Unicode: a becomes ᴀ, b becomes ʙ, and so on. Capital letters stay full size, so a sentence keeps its shape, with tall capitals at the start of names and small ones everywhere else. That’s how small caps have been set in books for centuries.

The second result adds a strikethrough on top, for the occasional formal correction.

Where small caps look right

Headings and labels. Small caps give a title some ceremony without shouting. ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀ ᴏɴᴇ looks bookish where CHAPTER ONE looks like a warning.

Bios and display names. A name in small caps stands out in a list of ordinary ones, and it stays readable.

Abbreviations. Typographers set acronyms like ɴᴀꜱᴀ or ʙʙᴄ in small caps so they don’t dominate a paragraph.

Time and eras. 9 ᴀᴍ and 1066 ᴀᴅ are traditionally set this way.

Why they look slightly off in some apps

These characters weren’t designed as a set. Unicode collected them from phonetic alphabets and other sources over the years, so in some fonts the ꜱ or ꜰ is a slightly different weight or height from its neighbours. It’s the font, not the text. The same string can look perfect on an iPhone and uneven on a Windows laptop.

Small caps in real documents

Word has true small caps: select the text and press Ctrl + Shift + K. Many professional fonts include properly drawn small capitals, which look better than the Unicode set. Google Docs doesn’t offer small caps formatting, so pasting these characters is a reasonable workaround there for a heading or two.

As with all styled text, keep small caps away from things people need to search for. ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ and small are different strings to a search box, and a screen reader may spell out each letter.

Questions people ask

Why is the x not converted?

Unicode never added a small capital X, because none of the phonetic alphabets that the small capitals were added for needed one. The generator leaves x as it is, and in most fonts the lowercase x is close enough in shape.

What is the shortcut for small caps in Word?

Select the text and press Ctrl + Shift + K on Windows or Cmd + Shift + K on a Mac. Word then draws small capitals from the font itself, which looks better in a document than these Unicode characters.

Do small caps count as more characters?

No. Each small capital is a single character, so the length stays the same. Only the struck-through small caps style adds extra marks.
