Strikethrough shortcut for every app
There’s no universal strikethrough key. Each app picked its own, and some have none. This table has them all, for Windows and Mac.

Apps that use typing instead of a key
Chat apps mostly skip keyboard shortcuts and read symbols you type around the words:
| App | Type this |
|---|---|
| Discord | ~~text~~ |
~~text~~ |
|
~text~ |
|
| Slack | ~text~ |
| Notion | ~text~ |
| Microsoft Teams | ~~text~~ |
| Markdown and GitHub | ~~text~~ |
| YouTube comments | -text- |
The single-versus-double tilde trips people up more than anything else. WhatsApp and Slack want one tilde on each side. Discord, Reddit and GitHub want two.
Making your own shortcut
Word for Windows. Go to File → Options → Customize Ribbon, click Customize next to Keyboard shortcuts, choose the Home Tab category and the Strikethrough command, then press the keys you want, for example Ctrl + Shift + X, and click Assign.
Any Office app on Windows. Add Strikethrough to the Quick Access Toolbar. Alt plus its position number then strikes the selection.
Mac apps without one. Use System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → App Shortcuts and add the menu title Strikethrough. The Mac shortcut guide walks through it.
Apps with no formatting at all
Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Snapchat, usernames, file names and email subject lines don’t support formatting, so no shortcut exists. The tool on this page makes struck text out of Unicode characters instead. Copy it, paste it, and the line comes with it.

Questions people ask
What is the keyboard shortcut for strikethrough?
It depends on the app. Google Docs, Sheets and Slides use Alt + Shift + 5 on Windows. Excel uses Ctrl + 5. Word and PowerPoint have no single key on Windows. On a Mac, most apps use Command + Shift + X.
Why is there no strikethrough shortcut in Word for Windows?
Microsoft never assigned one. Press Ctrl + D to open the Font dialog and Alt + K to tick Strikethrough, or assign your own key in File, Options, Customize Ribbon, Keyboard shortcuts.
How do I undo strikethrough with the keyboard?
Press the same shortcut again with the struck text selected. In every app listed here, strikethrough is a toggle.
Is there a strikethrough shortcut for Instagram or X?
No. Neither app supports text formatting, so no key can add a line. Copy struck text from the tool on this page and paste it in.
