How this works

Underlining with Unicode uses the same trick as strikethrough: a combining mark goes after every letter and attaches beneath it. U+0332, the combining low line, draws a single line. U+0333 draws two. The dotted and wavy styles use marks designed for phonetics (dots below and a tilde below), which happen to look like a spellchecker’s underline.

Turn off line through the spaces too if you want each word underlined on its own. With it on, the line runs unbroken through the whole phrase.

Which style to pick

Single underline is the one people expect. Use it for a title in a bio, a book name in a comment, or one word you want to land.

Double underline reads as final or totalled. Accountants use it under a bottom line, and it works for a punchline too.

Dotted looks like a hint: a definition, a term with more behind it, something to look at twice.

Wavy reads as wrong. Under a word, it looks exactly like a spelling error, which makes it useful for jokes about typos.

A word of caution about underlines

On the web, underlined text means “this is a link”. Readers will try to tap it. In a bio or a post that’s mostly harmless, but don’t underline text next to a real link, or people will tap the wrong one.

Search is the other issue. Underlined words are made of different characters from plain ones, so in-app search and hashtags won’t match them. Never underline a hashtag or a username you want people to find.

Underlining in documents

In Word, Google Docs, Pages and most editors, press Ctrl + U (⌘ + U on a Mac). Real formatting looks cleaner, works with every font and is read properly by screen readers. Keep the copy-paste version for places with no formatting at all.

How do I underline text on Instagram or X?

Why does my underline have gaps?

Each letter carries its own short underline mark. In most fonts they meet edge to edge, but some fonts leave a hairline gap or misalign the marks under wide letters like m and w. The low line (the first style) joins up most reliably.

Can I underline only one word?

Yes. Type just that word in the box, copy the result and paste it into your sentence. Or turn off "line through the spaces too" so the underline breaks between words.
