Formatting messages

Telegram has the most complete text formatting of the big messengers: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, spoilers, monospace and links. Strikethrough can be added three ways.

Keyboard shortcut (desktop). In Telegram Desktop for Windows or Linux, select the text in the message box and press Ctrl + Shift + X. On a Mac, it’s ⌘ + Shift + X.

Format menu (mobile and desktop). Select the text and open the context menu. On iPhone, tap Format and then Strikethrough. On Android, the formatting options appear in the menu (tap the three dots if you don’t see them). On desktop, right-click the selection and choose Formatting.

Tildes (desktop). In the desktop apps, ~~text~~ is converted to strikethrough when you send. It’s quick if you already use Markdown elsewhere.

All three produce real formatting, drawn cleanly in Telegram’s font and with no extra characters.

Bio, names and channels

Your bio, your name, and channel and group titles don’t take formatting. Unicode works in all of them because the line is part of the text. Keep an eye on length:

  • Bio: 70 characters on a standard account. Strikethrough uses two per letter, so about 35 struck letters is the most you can fit.
  • Names: short limits too, and struck names are harder for contacts to search for.

Channels and bots

If you run a channel, strikethrough in a post is a clean way to show a change: a sold-out item, a moved time, a corrected figure. Subscribers see both the old and the new value.

Bots that send messages through the Bot API can use strikethrough with Telegram’s HTML (<s>text</s>) or MarkdownV2 (~text~) parse modes. That’s different from what you type in the app, and a common source of confusion: MarkdownV2 uses a single tilde.

Removing strikethrough

Select the struck text and use the same shortcut or menu option to toggle it off. For Unicode strikethrough pasted into a bio, clean it with the remove formatting tool and paste the plain text back.
