The rows, explained
| Row | Looks like | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Wide | aesthetic | Fullwidth letters, digits and common punctuation |
| Spaced out | a e s t h e t i c | Normal letters with one space between each, three between words |
| Wide + spaced | a e s t h e t i c | Both: the widest look, very long |
| Wide capitals | AESTHETIC | The classic vaporwave title |
| Small caps | ᴀᴇꜱᴛʜᴇᴛɪᴄ | A narrow contrast, nice under a wide title |
Fullwidth spaces are a different character too: U+3000, the ideographic space, which is as wide as a fullwidth letter. That’s why wide text keeps its even rhythm across words.
Why fullwidth letters exist
Chinese, Japanese and Korean text is set in a grid of square cells. When Latin letters appear inside that grid, in a table or a vertical column, they need to fill a cell too. Fullwidth forms (U+FF01 to U+FF5E) were added for exactly that, so Japanese computers could line up ABC with 漢字. Copy-and-paste generators borrow them for the look.
The same history explains one quirk: X counts these characters as two each, because it weights East Asian characters double in its limit. Everywhere else they’re one.
Where it breaks
- Tags, links and mentions. #tag isn’t a hashtag and www.site.com isn’t a link. Write those in normal text.
- Spaces that collapse. Some apps and websites merge runs of spaces into one, so spaced-out text loses its word gaps. Fullwidth text doesn’t have that problem.
- Search. Neither fullwidth nor spaced letters match a normal search, so a caption in wide text won’t come up for its words.
- Screen readers. Spaced text is read letter by letter; fullwidth text may be read as “fullwidth latin small letter a”. Use it for a title or a mood, not for information.
Making it look right
Wide text is loud, so a little goes a long way. A single wide word above a line of normal text reads as a title. Pair WIDE capitals with small caps underneath for the vaporwave poster look, or add bubble letters for something rounder. To turn wide text back into normal letters, use fancy text to normal text; it handles the fullwidth spaces as well.
Questions people ask
What is wide text, and why is it called vaporwave text?
Wide text uses fullwidth letters, a set of Latin characters as wide as a Chinese or Japanese character. The vaporwave music and art scene of the early 2010s used them for titles like AESTHETICS, alongside pastel 90s graphics, and the name stuck.
What’s the difference between fullwidth and spaced-out text?
Fullwidth letters are different characters that are drawn wider. Spaced-out text is ordinary letters with a space typed between each one. Fullwidth looks even and solid; spaced text can be searched and read by screen readers, but some apps collapse the spaces.
Why do hashtags, links and usernames stop working in wide text?
A hashtag or @mention has to use the ordinary # and @ followed by ordinary letters. In fullwidth text they become # and @ and the letters are different characters, so the app no longer sees a tag or a link. Keep tags, links and handles in normal text.
Does wide text work on Instagram, Discord, TikTok and X?
Yes. Fullwidth letters are standard Unicode, so they paste into posts, captions, comments, bios and display names on all of them. Usernames usually reject them.
Does wide text count as extra characters?
Each fullwidth letter counts as one character on most platforms, the same as a normal letter. X is the exception: it counts characters from East Asian blocks as two, so wide text uses up a post twice as fast there. Spaced-out text roughly doubles the count everywhere because of the spaces.
