How it works on Facebook
Facebook’s post and comment boxes don’t support formatting. You can’t bold a word, let alone strike it through. But Facebook displays any Unicode text you give it, and Unicode has a combining mark, U+0336, that draws a horizontal stroke through the character before it. Put one after every letter and you get a continuous line through the word.
Paste it into a post, a comment, a group post, a Marketplace listing or a Messenger chat and it displays the same on phones and computers.
Where people use it
Marketplace price drops. $120 $90 tells buyers the price came down at a glance. It’s the most common use of strikethrough on Facebook by far.
Corrections. Editing a post to strike out a wrong date or time, with the right one next to it, is clearer than silently changing it after people have commented.
Humour. The struck-out honest thought followed by the polite one: “Please stop Thanks for the suggestion!”
Your bio and name
The short bio under your profile picture allows 101 characters. Strikethrough uses two characters per letter, so you can strike about 45 letters before you’re out of room.
Your profile name is different. Facebook’s names policy rejects symbols and unusual characters, and combining marks count. If you try to save a struck-through name you’ll get an error. Pages and groups have more freedom, but Facebook can still change names it considers misleading.
Messenger
Messenger doesn’t have a strikethrough button either. Copy a style from the tool and paste it into the chat box; it shows on phones and on the web like any other text. Keep it short in group chats, where notifications preview the first line and the marks make it harder to read.
Keeping posts findable
Facebook search and group search match plain words. If the struck word is the one people would search for, like the item you’re selling, mention it again in plain text. “Sofa SOLD” is fine once it’s sold. Before that, keep “sofa” plain so buyers can find it.
How it looks on different devices
The line is drawn by the device’s font, so it can sit a little higher or lower on different phones, and on some older Android fonts the segments have small gaps. The text itself is the same everywhere.
Questions people ask
How do you strikethrough text on Facebook?
Facebook has no strikethrough button. Type your text above, copy the strikethrough version and paste it into your post, comment or message. It shows up for everyone because the line is part of the text.
Why won’t Facebook accept strikethrough in my name?
Facebook’s names policy does not allow symbols, unusual characters or decorative styling in profile names, so names with combining marks are rejected. Pages and groups have looser rules, but Facebook can still change a name it considers misleading.
Does strikethrough work in Facebook Messenger?
Yes. Messenger displays the Unicode characters like any other text. It does not have its own strikethrough formatting, so the copy-and-paste version is the only option.
