The wave rows
| Row | Looks like | Mark |
|---|---|---|
| Wave below | w̰a̰v̰y̰ | U+0330 combining tilde below |
| Wavy strike | w̴a̴v̴y̴ | U+0334 combining tilde overlay |
| Zigzag above | w͛a͛v͛y͛ | U+035B combining zigzag above |
| Wave above and below | w̰͛a̰͛v̰͛y̰͛ | U+035B + U+0330 |
| Wiggly below | w᪶a᪶v᪶y᪶ | U+1AB6 combining wiggly line below |
| Wavy case | wAvY tExT | no marks, alternating capitals |
The checkbox under the box decides whether spaces get a wave too. Leave it on for one long squiggle across the whole line; turn it off to keep each word separate.
Two meanings of “wavy text”
Some people want letters with a squiggle, which is what the mark rows give you. Others mean the bouncing, alternating-case look, wAvY tExT, the one used to quote someone in a mocking voice (it’s also called spongebob case after a 2017 meme). The last row does that, skipping spaces and punctuation so the pattern stays even.
How the wave is made
A combining mark is a character with no width that attaches to the character before it. é can be written as e plus a combining acute accent; w̰ is w plus a combining tilde below. Repeat it after every letter and the little waves run together into one line. It’s the same method this site uses for strikethrough and underline, just with a different mark.
Where it works, and where it wobbles
- Font support. The tilde below and tilde overlay are old marks and draw almost everywhere. The zigzag is common. The wiggly line below was added more recently and fails on some older Android and Windows fonts.
- Line spacing. The wave sits just under the baseline, so on tightly spaced text it can touch the line below. In a busy chat that’s harmless; in a bio it can look crowded.
- Character limits. Each wave is one extra character per letter. A 20-letter wavy line costs 40.
- Screen readers. They may announce the marks or ignore them. The words stay readable either way, which makes waves gentler than zalgo.
To remove waves from text you’ve received, paste it into the remove formatting tool. For a straight line in the same spot, use the underline generator.
Questions people ask
How do I make wavy or squiggly text I can paste anywhere?
Type it in the box above and copy a row. Each letter is followed by a combining mark shaped like a wave, which the device draws under, over or through that letter. Because the wave is part of the text, it stays when you paste it into apps with no formatting.
Is wavy text the same as a wavy underline or a wavy strikethrough?
Close. In Word or CSS a wavy underline is formatting (text-decoration-style: wavy), drawn as one smooth line. Here each letter carries its own small wave, so the line is made of joined pieces. The “wavy strike” row puts the wave through the middle instead.
Why does the wave look different, or disappear, on some apps?
Each app draws combining marks with its own font. Most draw the tilde below and tilde overlay well. The zigzag above is fine on most phones, and the wiggly line below is newer, so older fonts may show a box or nothing for it.
Does wavy text work on Instagram, Discord and X?
Yes, in posts, comments, captions, bios and messages. Usernames usually reject combining marks. Every wave counts as a character, so a wavy word uses twice the characters of a plain one.
How do I remove wavy text and get plain text back?
Paste it into the remove formatting tool on this site. It deletes every wave mark the generator makes, plus strikethrough and underline marks, and leaves real accents alone. For wAvY tExT, the case change can’t be undone automatically, since the tool can’t know which capitals were yours.
