Three ways to strike through a message
Shortcut. Select the words in the message box and press Ctrl + Shift + X on Windows and Linux, or ⌘ + Shift + X on a Mac. Press it again to remove it.
Toolbar. The formatting toolbar in the message box has a strikethrough button (an S with a line through it). Select the text and click it.
Markup. Type a single tilde on each side: ~like this~. Slack converts it as you type or when you send, depending on your settings. One tilde, not two: Slack’s markup isn’t standard Markdown.
Where it helps at work
Changed plans. “Standup moved 10:00 10:30” shows the change without anyone scrolling back.
Task threads. Strike items in a checklist message as they’re done. Unlike deleting them, it leaves a record.
Honest edits. Edit a message, strike the wrong part, add the correction. Replies to the original still make sense.
Status, names and channels
Your status, display name and channel names don’t read formatting. Unicode strikethrough works in the status and display name, because it’s just characters. Channel names are restricted to lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, so styled text isn’t allowed there.
Use it sparingly in names: struck letters make you harder to find in the member search and the @mention list.
Combining styles
Slack lets you stack formats: *~bold and struck~* or _~italic and struck~_. Inline code and code blocks ignore formatting, which is useful for showing someone the syntax:
`~this stays as typed~`
When markup doesn’t convert
If typed tildes show up literally, check Preferences → Advanced in Slack for the option to format messages with markup. With it off, Slack expects you to use the toolbar or shortcut instead, and typed symbols stay as they are.
Questions people ask
How do you strikethrough in Slack?
Select the text in the message box and press Ctrl + Shift + X (Cmd + Shift + X on a Mac), or click the strikethrough button in the formatting toolbar. You can also type a tilde on each side: ~like this~.
Why does ~~text~~ not work in Slack?
Slack uses one tilde on each side, not two. With double tildes, Slack strikes the text but may leave stray tildes. Use ~text~ or the keyboard shortcut.
Can I use strikethrough in my Slack status?
Status text does not support formatting, but Unicode strikethrough displays. Copy it from the tool above and paste it into your status.
