Two editors, two methods
Reddit’s comment and post boxes have two modes, and strikethrough works differently in each.
Markdown mode. Type the formatting yourself. Strikethrough is two tildes on each side:
~~I was wrong~~ Edit: I was right, actually.
Old Reddit uses Markdown everywhere, and new Reddit offers it via the Markdown switch below the comment box.
Rich text mode. The default editor on new Reddit and in the apps. Select the words and press the strikethrough button (an S with a line through it) in the formatting bar. If you type tildes in this mode, Reddit shows them literally.
The edit etiquette
Strikethrough has a real job on Reddit: honest edits. Quietly changing a comment after people have replied makes their replies look wrong. Striking out the original and adding the correction keeps the thread readable:
The patch releases Tuesday.Edit: Thursday, see the mod post.
The same goes for sale posts and giveaway threads: strike items that are gone instead of deleting them.
Titles, flair and other plain-text fields
Post titles are plain text, capped at 300 characters, and can’t be edited once posted. Unicode strikethrough displays in them, but think twice: struck words won’t match searches, and both Reddit search and Google index titles. Keep the topic of your post plain and strike only the joke.
Flair and community descriptions are similar: no Markdown, but Unicode works where the field accepts it.
Other Markdown you can stack
Reddit lets you combine strikethrough with other styles: ~~**bold and struck**~~, ~~*italic*~~ and spoilers with >!hidden!<. In code blocks and inline code, tildes are shown as plain characters, which helps when you’re explaining the syntax.
When nothing renders
Some third-party apps and RSS readers show raw Markdown. If people tell you your comment is full of tildes, they’re seeing the source. That’s harmless, but if it matters, the Unicode version displays the same everywhere.
Questions people ask
How do you cross out text on Reddit?
In Markdown mode, wrap the text in two tildes on each side: ~~like this~~. In the rich text editor, select the text and click the strikethrough button in the formatting bar. Both work in comments and post bodies on the website and the app.
Why does strikethrough show tildes instead of a line?
You are probably in the rich text editor, which treats typed tildes as plain text. Switch to Markdown mode, or use the toolbar button instead of typing the tildes.
Can I strikethrough a Reddit post title?
Titles do not support formatting. You can paste Unicode strikethrough from the tool above, but titles cannot be edited after posting, so check the preview carefully first. Struck words also will not match searches.
How do I edit a comment and show what I changed?
Edit the comment, wrap the wrong part in ~~tildes~~ and add the correction after it, often with "Edit:" in front. Readers can see both what you said and what changed.
