Double strikethrough text and what’s really possible

There’s no two-line strike in Unicode, so nothing you copy can carry one. These are the closest versions that do paste, and where to get a true double line.

Why Unicode can’t do it

Copy-paste strikethrough works by putting a combining mark after every letter. Unicode has a long stroke (U+0336), a short stroke (U+0335) and a tilde overlay (U+0334), but no mark with two horizontal lines. Stacking two of the same mark doesn’t help: both draw at the same height, so it still looks like one line.

The options that do give you two visible lines combine the strike with a second mark at a different height.

The closest copy-paste versions

Style Looks like Lines
Strike + underline d̶̲o̶̲u̶̲b̶̲l̶̲e̶̲ through the middle and along the bottom
Strike + overline d̶̅o̶̅u̶̅b̶̅l̶̅e̶̅ through the middle and along the top
Double slash d̸̷o̸̷u̸̷b̸̷l̸̷e̸̷ two diagonal strokes

Strike + underline is the most readable of the three and renders well on most phones. Double slash looks heavier and works best on one short word.

A real double strikethrough in Word and PowerPoint

Both apps have it in the Font dialog:

  1. Select the text.
  2. Press Ctrl + D in Word or Ctrl + T in PowerPoint (⌘ + D or ⌘ + T on a Mac).
  3. Under Effects, tick Double strikethrough.
  4. Click OK.

Lawyers and editors use it to mark text that’s been removed twice, or to tell two kinds of deletion apart in the same document. The Word guide and PowerPoint guide cover the rest.

On a web page

CSS can draw a double line through text:

.double {
  text-decoration: line-through double;
}

That’s real formatting, so it only works on your own pages. Paste the result somewhere else and the line is gone. The HTML and CSS guide has the full set of options, including colour and thickness.

When to use which

  • Inside a document you control: Word’s real double strikethrough.
  • On your website: the CSS rule above.
  • In a post, bio, chat or anywhere else: strike + underline from the tool on this page.

Whichever you pick, keep it short. Two lines through a word draw the eye harder than one, and a whole sentence of it becomes hard to read.

Questions people ask

How do I make double strikethrough text?

For copy and paste, there’s no true double strikethrough, because Unicode has only one horizontal line mark. Use strike + underline or strike + overline from the tool on this page. In Word and PowerPoint, open the Font dialog and tick Double strikethrough.

Does Google Docs have double strikethrough?

No. Google Docs has single strikethrough only. You can paste copy-paste text from this page into a document, but it uses Unicode marks rather than Docs formatting.

Does Excel have double strikethrough?

No. Excel’s Format Cells dialog has a single Strikethrough box. Double underline exists, double strikethrough doesn’t.

Can I stack two strikethrough marks on each letter?

You can, but they draw in the same place, so it looks like one line. That’s why this tool combines the strike with an underline or overline instead, which gives you two visibly separate lines.
