How the cleaner tells glitch from accents
Zalgo is ordinary letters followed by piles of combining marks, characters with no width that attach to the letter before them. An accent like é can be written the same way: an e followed by one combining acute. A tool that deletes every combining mark fixes zalgo and quietly breaks French, Spanish, German and Vietnamese at the same time.
This cleaner uses a list instead. It removes the marks that glitch generators draw from, such as the vertical lines, the bridges, the overlays and the double marks, and leaves alone the dozen or so that real alphabets use: grave, acute, circumflex, tilde, diaeresis, ring, caron, cedilla, ogonek, dot below and the Vietnamese horn. Paste c̯̑̓ȧ̗͈͛ͅf̷̙̳ͧ̄é̡͔̫͆ n̗̫̰̓̅a̟̦ͧ͂ï͕͔͐ͤ̎v̖͈ͮ͋̒͞e͈ͭͣ̏̕ and you get café naïve back, accents intact.

Zalgo, glitch, cursed: same fix
Glitch text, cursed text, creepy text and “Z̷a̸l̶g̵o̶” are names for the same trick, so this page removes all of them. Most of what people call cursed text is zalgo, sometimes mixed with fancy letters like 𝔣𝔯𝔞𝔨𝔱𝔲𝔯 or ⓑⓤⓑⓑⓛⓔ. Those are swapped back to plain letters as well, so a mixed message comes out as plain text in one go.
When you’d need this
- Someone posted zalgo in a chat and it covers the messages around it. Copy the message, paste it here, read it.
- A username or display name is unreadable, or you need to search for it.
- You copied text from a game or a meme and the marks keep coming along into your document.
- Moderating a forum or a server. Clean a reported message before you log or quote it.
If something is left over
A few cases need a second look:
- Marks the cleaner keeps on purpose. A glitch built only from acute, grave and tilde marks will lose most of its stack, but one of each may stay, since they look identical to accents. Delete those by hand.
- Look-alike letters from other alphabets. Some cursed text swaps Latin letters for Cyrillic or Greek ones, like а for a or ο for o. They look the same, so nothing on the page signals them, and this tool leaves real Cyrillic and Greek alone.
- Upside-down text. Flipped letters (ʇxǝʇ) are different characters entirely and are not converted.
Want it back the other way?
The zalgo text generator makes glitch text in four strengths, and the same text always glitches the same way, so you can recreate a look later. For any other style this site makes, from strikethrough to small caps, the remove formatting tool does the same job as this page.
Questions people ask
How do I remove zalgo text?
Paste it into the box above. The result appears instantly as plain text; click it to copy. It works on a single word or a whole page, and nothing is uploaded: the cleaning happens in your browser.
Will it delete real accents like é, ñ or Vietnamese letters?
No, with one honest caveat. The cleaner removes the marks zalgo generators use and skips the ones languages need, like the acute in é, the tilde in ñ and the hook in ở. Typed accents are usually a single precomposed character and are never touched. If someone stacked an acute accent on a letter as part of the glitch, though, that one acute stays, because it looks exactly like a real accent.
Why does zalgo text spill over the lines above and below?
Each mark has no width and stacks on the letter before it. Browsers draw the stack as tall as it gets, and most apps do not clip it to the line, so a heavy stack reaches into the text above and below.
Can zalgo text crash an app?
Rarely today. Very long stacks used to slow down or crash some older text renderers, and a few platforms still trim the number of marks per letter for that reason. Modern browsers and phones handle it, just slowly when a page has a lot of it.
How do I stop people posting zalgo in my Discord server?
Use a moderation bot with a regex or a "zalgo" filter, which most popular moderation bots include. A simple rule is to flag any message where a letter carries more than three or four combining marks in a row. Real languages almost never need more than two.
