Why there is no strikethrough character
Unicode has characters for letters, digits and symbols, but almost none for letters with a style applied. Strikethrough is normally formatting: Word stores your text plus a note saying “draw a line here”. That note is lost the moment you paste into a place with no formatting, which is most of the internet.
Combining marks are the way round it. They’re characters with no width that attach to the character before them, the same mechanism that writes é as e plus an accent. U+0336 is one of them, and its shape happens to be a horizontal line. Follow every letter with it and you get strikethrough that travels with the text.
The marks, side by side
| Mark | Name | On a word |
|---|---|---|
| U+0336 | Combining long stroke overlay | s̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶ |
| U+0335 | Combining short stroke overlay | s̵t̵r̵i̵k̵e̵ |
| U+0334 | Combining tilde overlay | s̴t̴r̴i̴k̴e̴ |
| U+0337 | Combining short solidus overlay | s̷t̷r̷i̷k̷e̷ |
| U+0338 | Combining long solidus overlay | s̸t̸r̸i̸k̸e̸ |
Copying a mark on its own is useful in two cases: when you’re building struck text in a spreadsheet or a script, and when you only want one or two letters crossed out. Click a tile above, click after the letter in your text, and paste.
How to insert it by hand
| Where | How |
|---|---|
| Word on Windows | Type the letter, then 0336, then Alt + X |
| Windows, any app | Open Character Map, tick Advanced view, search “stroke overlay”, copy |
| Mac | Edit > Emoji & Symbols, search “stroke”, or switch to the Unicode Hex Input keyboard and hold Option while typing 0336 |
| Excel and Sheets | =UNICHAR(822) gives the mark; join it after each letter |
| HTML | ̶ after each character |
For anything longer than a word, typing into the box at the top is quicker than any of these.
Things that look like strikethrough but aren’t
- ø, đ, ł, ħ. Real letters from Danish, Croatian, Polish and Maltese with a stroke built in. They’re single characters, and there are only a handful.
- ∅ and ⌀. The empty-set symbol from maths and the diameter sign from engineering drawings.
- ✗ ✘ ❌. Cross marks for “wrong” or “no”, not a line through text.
- ⊘ and ⃠. A slashed circle, as in “no entry”.
If you want a letter you can’t find with a built-in stroke, the combining mark is the answer: it works on every letter and digit, in any alphabet.
Counting characters
Every struck letter is two characters: the letter and the mark. A 10-letter word costs 20 toward a character limit on X, Instagram or a bio, and the tool’s counter shows the struck length as you type. For the technical side, including code to generate it in JavaScript and Python, see Unicode strikethrough.
Questions people ask
What is the strikethrough symbol?
It is U+0336, COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY. On its own it’s invisible. Placed straight after a letter it draws a line through that letter, and a run of struck letters joins into one line, like s̶y̶m̶b̶o̶l̶.
Is there an Alt code for strikethrough?
No. Windows Alt codes cover a few hundred older characters and combining marks aren’t among them. In Word you can type 0336 and press Alt + X straight after a letter. Everywhere else, copy the mark or the finished text from this page.
How do I type the strikethrough symbol in Word?
Type the letter, then 0336, then press Alt + X: Word turns the code into the mark and the letter gets a line through it. For more than a few letters, Word’s own strikethrough button on the Home tab is faster and stays editable.
Why is the line off-centre on some letters?
The font decides where the line sits. Most draw it at the middle of a lowercase letter, so it can look low on capitals and digits. A few fonts, including Segoe UI on Windows, draw it near the baseline, where it looks more like an underline.
What’s the difference between U+0335 and U+0336?
U+0336 is the long stroke, which spans the whole letter so neighbours join into a continuous line. U+0335 is the short stroke, which is narrower and leaves small gaps between letters, like s̵h̵o̵r̵t̵.
