Strikethrough on iPhone Notes, Messages and everywhere else
Apple’s own apps have a strikethrough button in their format menus. For Instagram, TikTok and anywhere without one, copy struck text from this page.

In Notes
- Double-tap a word, or drag the handles to select more.
- Tap Aa in the toolbar above the keyboard.
- Tap the strikethrough button (S̶), next to bold, italic and underline.
Tap it again to remove the line. For to-do lists, Notes uses checklists rather than strikethrough: ticked items move to the bottom of the list instead of being crossed out.
In Messages
Since iOS 18, iMessage has its own text formatting:
- Type your message and select the words to strike.
- Tap the formatting option (Aa) in the menu that appears above the selection.
- Choose Strikethrough.
This only works over iMessage, the blue bubbles. Green-bubble SMS and RCS messages are sent as plain text, and people on older versions of iOS see plain text too. If the line matters, paste a Unicode version from this page instead: it shows on any phone.
In Mail
Select the text in the message body, tap Aa in the shortcut bar above the keyboard, and choose the strikethrough button in the format panel. The subject line can’t be formatted, so paste a Unicode version there if you need one.
In WhatsApp
Type a single tilde on each side, ~like this~, and WhatsApp draws the line when you send. Or select the text, tap BIU in the menu, and choose Strikethrough. The WhatsApp guide covers the details.
In Instagram, TikTok, X and everything else
Most apps on your phone don’t support formatting at all. For those:
- Open this page in Safari and type your text in the box.
- Tap a result. It’s copied.
- Switch to the app and paste.
The line travels with the text because each letter carries an invisible line mark. It looks the same to everyone who reads it, on iPhone and Android.
Save struck text for later
If you use the same struck phrase often, make a shortcut for it:
- Copy the struck text from this page.
- Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Text Replacement and tap +.
- Paste the struck text into Phrase and type a short code, like
xx, into Shortcut.
Now typing the code in any app offers the struck phrase as a suggestion.
Why it looks different in some apps
The line is drawn by whichever font the app uses. Most draw a clean, continuous line. A few fonts place it a little high or leave small gaps between letters. The text underneath is identical; only the drawing changes.

Questions people ask
How do you strikethrough text on an iPhone?
In Notes and Mail, select the text, tap Aa (the format button), then the strikethrough button. In Messages on iOS 18 or later, select the text and choose Strikethrough from the formatting options. In other apps, copy struck text from a generator like this one and paste it.
Why can’t I strikethrough in Instagram on my iPhone?
Instagram has no text formatting at all, on any phone. Make the struck text on this page, copy it, and paste it into your caption, comment or bio.
Why does my strikethrough disappear when I paste from Notes?
Notes stores the line as formatting. Apps that only accept plain text, like Instagram or WhatsApp, drop it on paste. The Unicode version from this page keeps the line because it’s part of the characters.
Can I type strikethrough text with my iPhone keyboard?
Not directly. You can save struck phrases as Text Replacements in Settings, General, Keyboard, so typing a short code expands to the struck version.
