Serif styles look most like a printed book; sans styles look more like an app or a modern headline. On LinkedIn, the sans bold row tends to sit most naturally next to the platformโs own font.
Why it works where bold buttons donโt
Formatting is a note attached to text: โshow these words in boldโ. Apps with a bold button store that note, but most social apps throw it away. Mathematicians needed letters whose style carries meaning, since ๐ and ๐ฑ can be different things in a formula, so Unicode gave them separate characters. Paste those characters into a LinkedIn post and the style is part of the text itself.
Where it goes wrong
- Search. โ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐โ wonโt match a search for โbig newsโ, on the platform or on Google. Donโt style your name, your company or anything people should find.
- Screen readers. Some read each characterโs full name, others skip it. A whole post in bold italic can be unreadable for a blind follower.
- Copying out. If someone pastes your styled text into a document, it wonโt take their font and spell-check flags every word. Fancy text to normal text fixes that.
- Old devices. Very old phones may show boxes, especially for italic and bold italic.
A sensible way to use it
Style one thing per post: a hook on the first line, a short heading, or a single word you want to stress. Leave the body plain. That gets the attention without the downsides. For a struck-out phrase in a LinkedIn post (a popular โbefore afterโ format), see strikethrough on LinkedIn, and for a softer look try wide text or small caps.
Questions people ask
Is this real bold italic text, or a font?
Neither, exactly. Itโs a set of Unicode characters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block that look like bold italic letters. Because they are characters rather than formatting, the style survives being pasted into apps with no bold or italic button.
Why donโt my numbers turn bold italic, and why does the italic h look different?
Unicode only has bold, double-struck, sans, sans bold and monospace digits, so in italic and bold italic the numbers stay plain. The italic h is โ (U+210E, the Planck constant), because that character existed before the maths alphabet was added and Unicode avoided a duplicate.
Does bold italic work on LinkedIn, Instagram, X and WhatsApp?
Yes. LinkedIn posts, Instagram captions and bios, and X posts have no bold or italic button, so pasted Unicode is the only way to get the look. WhatsApp has its own formatting: *bold* and _italic_ inside the app, which you can combine as *_bold italic_*.
Is Unicode bold text bad for accessibility or search?
It can be. Screen readers may read each letter as โmathematical bold italic small bโ or skip it, and search engines and in-app search donโt match it to normal words. Use it for a word or a short heading, and keep names, hashtags and key facts in normal text.
How do I make bold text with a strikethrough or underline?
The last two rows in the generator do it: bold italic with a line through and bold italic underlined. For other combinations, the strikethrough generator on the home page has bold and italic struck rows too.
