Why it can’t be a font

A font is a set of drawings your device uses to show letters. When you copy text, the letters travel but the font doesn’t. Paste into Instagram, Discord or a text message and the app redraws the letters in its own font. A “crossed out font” would lose its line the moment it left your screen.

What travels is the characters themselves. Unicode, the standard every device uses for text, has a set of tiny marks that attach to the letter before them. One of them, U+0336, is a horizontal line. Put it after every letter and you get c̶r̶o̶s̶s̶e̶d̶ o̶u̶t̶ text that looks like a font but is really just text.

What you can do with it

  • Bios and names. Cross out an old job title next to the new one, or a joke word in your display name.
  • Captions and comments. The classic “I’m n̶o̶t̶ crying” self-correction, where both words are the point.
  • Lists. Tick off items in a note you’re going to post: m̶i̶l̶k̶, e̶g̶g̶s̶, bread.
  • Messages. In apps without a formatting menu, it’s the only way to cross something out.

Keep it to a word or a short phrase. Long runs of crossed-out text are hard to read, and every letter costs two characters toward any length limit.

In Word, Google Docs and design tools

Documents and slides have a real strikethrough option, and that’s the better choice there: it uses your document’s font, it’s searchable, and you can turn it off. The shortcuts are in the strikethrough shortcut table.

Design tools vary. Many have strikethrough as a text style next to bold and underline. If yours doesn’t, paste the Unicode version: most design apps accept it, though how the line looks depends on the font you’ve picked.

Styles you can copy

The tool shows every style at once:

Style Looks like
Strikethrough c̶r̶o̶s̶s̶e̶d̶
Short strike c̵r̵o̵s̵s̵e̵d̵
Wavy strike c̴r̴o̴s̴s̴e̴d̴
Slash c̷r̷o̷s̷s̷e̷d̷
Strike + underline c̶̲r̶̲o̶̲s̶̲s̶̲e̶̲d̶̲

Before you post

Crossed-out text comes with two catches. In-app search can’t find struck words, because c̶a̶t̶ isn’t the same string as cat. And screen readers either skip the marks or read them out one by one. Use it for jokes and emphasis, and keep anything people need to find or understand in plain text. If you ever want it back to normal, the remove formatting tool strips the line off again.

Questions people ask

Is there a crossed out font I can install?

You could install a font with a line through it, but it would only show on your own computer, in apps where you chose that font. Anyone you send the text to would see plain letters. Unicode strikethrough avoids that because the line is in the characters.

How do I use a crossed out font on Instagram?

Instagram doesn’t let you choose fonts. Type your text on this page, copy the crossed-out version, and paste it into your bio, caption or comment. It keeps its line because it’s made of characters, not a font.

What’s the difference between a crossed out font and strikethrough?

People use both names for the same look. "Strikethrough" is the formatting option in Word and Google Docs. "Crossed out font" is usually what people search for when they want that look somewhere without formatting, like social media.

Can I change the style of the line?

Yes. The results include a short stroke, a wavy line, single and double slashes, strike + underline and a redacted block style. Pin the one you like with the star and it stays at the top.
