Two ways to strike through on Discord
Markdown, for messages. Discord reads a small set of Markdown. Wrap text in double tildes and it’s drawn with a line through it in the chat font:
~~this plan was perfect~~ this plan needs work
It works in server channels, DMs, threads, forum posts and your About Me. It costs only four extra characters however long the text is, and it looks the cleanest, because Discord draws a proper line.
Unicode, for everything else. Markdown isn’t rendered in display names, server nicknames, custom statuses or server names. That’s where the copy-paste version comes in: the line is part of the characters, so Discord shows it wherever text appears.
Combining it with other formatting
Discord lets you stack styles. Put the tildes outside the other markers:
~~**bold and struck**~~~~*italic and struck*~~~~__underlined and struck__~~||~~a struck-through spoiler~~||, with one pair fully inside the other
Code blocks and inline code ignore formatting, so `~~text~~` shows the tildes literally. That’s handy when you’re explaining the syntax to someone.
On mobile
The Discord app for iPhone and Android uses the same Markdown. Type the tildes by hand. On iOS the tilde is on the second symbols page of the keyboard (tap 123, then #+=). On Android Gboard it’s on the second symbols page too.
Character limits
A normal message is capped at 2,000 characters, and an About Me at 190. Markdown strikethrough only adds four characters. Unicode strikethrough doubles the length of the text it touches. A 100-character status becomes 200, which is why the tool above shows a running count against Discord’s limits.
Etiquette
In busy servers, a struck-through line is the polite way to correct yourself without deleting a message people have already replied to. Edit the message, strike the wrong part, and add the right answer after it. The conversation still makes sense to someone scrolling back later.
Questions people ask
How do you cross out text on Discord?
Type two tildes, your text, and two more tildes: ~~like this~~. When you send the message, Discord draws a line through it. On desktop you can also select the text in the message box and click the strikethrough button in the small toolbar that appears.
How do I show tildes without striking through?
Put a backslash before the first tildes: \~~not struck~~. Discord shows the tildes as plain characters instead of formatting.
Can I put strikethrough in my Discord name?
Markdown does not work in display names or server nicknames, but Unicode strikethrough does. Generate it above, copy it and paste it into the name field. Keep it short, because each letter counts as two characters.
Why did my strikethrough not work?
Check that you used two tildes on each side with no space between the tildes and your text. One tilde on each side does nothing on Discord, and ~~ text ~~ with spaces inside may not format.
