How to cross out text
- Type or paste your words into the box at the top of the page.
- Pick the app you're posting to, if it's listed. The tool shows that app's own syntax and its character limit.
- Click any result to copy it, then paste it where you want it.
That's the whole thing. Pin the styles you use most with the star and they stay at the top next time.
How a line gets through your text
Most apps don't give you a strikethrough button, and the ones that do keep it to themselves: paste formatted text from Google Docs into Instagram and the line disappears. This tool takes a different route. It doesn't format your text at all. It adds characters to it.
Unicode, the standard that tells every computer which character is which, includes combining characters. They are tiny marks with no width of their own that attach to whatever letter comes before them. That's how é can be an e plus an accent. Put the combining long stroke, U+0336, after every letter and the strokes join up into one line through the word.
Because the result is ordinary text, it survives a copy and paste into a bio, a comment, a username field or a text message. There's no image and no HTML for the app to strip out.
What it costs you
Every mark is a character. hello is five characters, and h̶e̶l̶l̶o̶ is ten. On X, with its 280-character limit, that adds up fast. Pick a platform under Posting to and the tool counts it for you and warns you before you go over.
There's a second cost. Search inside apps usually can't match struck-through words, because c̶a̶t̶ is not the same string as cat. And screen readers handle the marks badly: some skip them, some read each one out. Keep it for jokes, corrections and emphasis, not for anything a reader needs to understand.
A strikethrough says two things at once: what you first wrote, and what you're saying instead.
When the app has its own strikethrough, use that
Discord, Reddit, WhatsApp, Slack and Telegram all understand a typed shortcut. Wrap your words in tildes and the app draws a real line, in its own font, without using extra characters. The tool shows the right syntax for each one under Native formatting. Word processors and spreadsheets have keyboard shortcuts instead. These guides cover each one:

Wavy, double, slash and redacted styles
The tool gives you fifteen variations. The wavy strike uses a tilde overlay, so the line wobbles through the letters. Slash and long slash cross each letter on the diagonal, and double slash stacks both. Redacted swaps every letter for a solid block, like a censored document.
A true double strikethrough, two parallel lines, doesn't exist in Unicode. The nearest you can paste are strike + underline and strike + overline. The double strikethrough page compares them, and covers the real double line in Word.
Is it a font?
People search for a "crossed out font", but no font would survive the trip: when you paste into Instagram or a chat app, the app uses its own font. These are characters, not a font, which is why they keep their line. The crossed out font guide explains the difference and what to use in Word, Google Docs and Canva.
Strike through text on any website
Drag this button to your bookmarks bar: S̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶ selection. Then select words in any text box, on any site, and click the bookmark. The selection gets crossed out in place, and clicking again on struck words clears the line. Where a page won't let it edit, it copies the struck text for you to paste. It runs only when you click it and sends nothing anywhere.
On this page you don't need it: select words in the box at the top and press Strike selection to cross out just those words, like Join us on F̶r̶i̶d̶a̶y̶ Saturday.
Other line styles
The same trick works with other marks. A slash reads as "no", a double underline looks like an accountant's total, and a wavy line under a word looks like a spellchecker caught it. Each has its own generator:

Questions people ask
How do I make strikethrough text?
Type or paste your words into the box at the top of this page. Every style updates as you type. Click a result, or its copy button, and paste it wherever you want. The line is part of the text itself, so it stays put after you paste.
Why does the strikethrough look different on my phone?
The line is drawn by whatever font the app uses. Most fonts draw a clean line, but some position it a little higher or lower, and a few older Android fonts show small gaps between letters. The text is identical either way; only the drawing changes.
Does strikethrough text count as more characters?
Yes. Each letter carries an extra invisible mark, so struck-through text uses about twice as many characters as plain text. Pick a platform under "Posting to" and the tool shows how much of that platform’s limit you are using.
Can screen readers read strikethrough text?
Usually they read the letters and skip the marks, but some read every mark aloud, which turns a short word into a long string of noise. Use it for emphasis or jokes, not for information people need to understand.
How do I remove strikethrough from text?
Paste it into the remove-formatting tool, which strips every line mark and gives you plain text back. In apps with real formatting, select the text and press the same strikethrough shortcut again.
Is there a double strikethrough?
Not as a single Unicode mark. Unicode has one horizontal line that goes through a letter, so copy-paste text can’t carry two parallel lines. The closest options here are strike + underline, strike + overline and double slash. Word has a real double strikethrough in its Font dialog.
Is this a crossed out font?
No. Fonts can’t travel with copied text, so a "crossed out font" wouldn’t survive a paste into Instagram or Discord. What this tool makes is ordinary text with a line mark after every letter. It looks the same, and it works anywhere text works.
Strikethrough, strike through or strikethru?
All the same thing: a line through text to show it’s cancelled or replaced. "Strikethrough" is the usual spelling in apps like Word and Google Docs; "strikeout", "cross out" and "line through" mean the same.
Does it work on Instagram, Discord and WhatsApp?
Yes. The Unicode version pastes into all three. Discord and WhatsApp also have their own syntax (~~text~~ and ~text~) that draws a cleaner line without extra characters. Pick the app under "Posting to" and the tool shows both.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server. The last thing you typed is kept in your own browser so it’s still there when you come back.
