Strikethrough on Android in any app
Android keyboards like Gboard don’t have a strikethrough key. Some apps have their own option; for everything else, copy struck text from this page.

In WhatsApp
Two ways, both work:
- Type a single tilde on each side:
~like this~. WhatsApp draws the line when the message sends. - Or select the words, tap ⋮ (more) in the menu above the selection, and choose Strikethrough.
One tilde, not two. Doubles are Discord’s syntax and show up as literal tildes in WhatsApp. The WhatsApp guide has more.
In the Google Docs app
- Tap the pencil to edit, then select the text.
- Tap the A (format) button at the top of the screen.
- On the Text tab, tap the strikethrough button (S̶).
The line is part of the document and shows on every device that opens it. Google Sheets and Slides work the same way.
In Telegram
Select the text, open the menu that appears over it (on some phones it’s under ⋮), choose Format, then Strikethrough. Telegram keeps it as formatting, so it shows for everyone in the chat.
In Instagram, TikTok, X and everything else
Most apps don’t support formatting at all, and no keyboard can add it for them. Use copy-paste strikethrough:
- Open this page in Chrome and type in the box.
- Tap a result. It’s copied to your clipboard.
- Switch to the app and long-press, then Paste.
The line is built from invisible Unicode marks attached to every letter, so it pastes into captions, comments, bios and messages and looks the same for people on iPhone.
Keep struck text handy
Gboard keeps recent clipboard items. Tap the clipboard icon in the Gboard toolbar and pin a struck phrase you use often, so it’s one tap away in any app. Samsung Keyboard has a similar clipboard panel.
When it looks wrong
Android phones use many different fonts, and a few draw the combining line imperfectly: a little high, or broken into short dashes between letters. The characters underneath are identical, so it will look right on the reader’s phone if their font draws it cleanly. If a style looks bad on yours, try the short strike row instead of the long one. It often joins up better on older Android fonts.

Questions people ask
How do you strikethrough text on Android?
It depends on the app. WhatsApp and Telegram have a Strikethrough option when you select text, and the Google Docs app has one in its format menu. Apps without formatting, like Instagram and TikTok, need copy-paste strikethrough from a generator like this one.
Does Gboard have strikethrough?
No. Gboard and most Android keyboards type plain text only. Formatting comes from the app you’re typing in, not the keyboard.
Why does strikethrough look broken on my Android phone?
Some older Android fonts draw the line in short pieces with gaps between letters, or slightly too high. The text is fine; it’s how that font draws the mark. It usually looks continuous on newer phones.
Will my strikethrough show on iPhone too?
Yes. Copy-paste strikethrough is ordinary Unicode text, so it shows on iPhone, Android and computers. App formatting, like WhatsApp’s, shows for everyone in that app.
