Three ways to strike through on WhatsApp

Type the tildes. WhatsApp turns ~text~ into struck-through text when the message is sent. It’s the fastest way once you’re used to it, and it works the same on Android, iPhone, WhatsApp Web and the desktop app.

Use the formatting menu. Select the words you’ve typed in the message box. On Android, tap the three-dot menu that appears and choose Strikethrough. On iPhone, tap Format (you may need to tap the arrow to find it), then Strikethrough. WhatsApp adds the tildes for you.

Paste Unicode. The About text under your name, your profile name and some other fields don’t read formatting codes. Copy the strikethrough above and paste it in. It works because the line is part of the characters.

The rules WhatsApp follows

WhatsApp’s formatting is fussier than Discord’s or Slack’s:

  • One tilde per side. ~~text~~ shows stray tildes.
  • No spaces inside. ~text~ works. ~ text ~ doesn’t.
  • One line at a time. A tilde pair doesn’t carry across a line break. To strike two lines, wrap each line separately. The native result in the tool above does this for you.
  • Nesting works. *~bold and struck~* gives bold strikethrough.

Good uses

Changed plans. “Dinner at 7 8” says exactly what changed, and nobody has to scroll back to compare.

Lists in a group. Shopping or packing lists shared in a group chat: strike items as they’re done.

Tone. The struck-out honest answer followed by the polite one is as old as messaging.

About, status and names

Your About has a 139-character limit and ignores formatting. Unicode strikethrough uses two characters per letter, so a fully struck About can only be about 69 letters long. Strike one word, not the whole line.

Status updates (the 24-hour photo and text posts) display Unicode fine. Channel names and descriptions also accept it.

A note on readability

Struck text in a group chat reads clearly to people, but screen readers on phones handle it differently: some skip the tildes formatting entirely, and some read Unicode marks one by one. If it matters, write the correction in plain words too.

Questions people ask

How do I strikethrough text on WhatsApp?

Type a tilde, your text, then another tilde: ~like this~. When you send it, WhatsApp draws a line through the text. You can also select the text while typing and choose Strikethrough from the formatting menu.

Why is my WhatsApp strikethrough not working?

The tildes must touch the text. ~ like this ~ with spaces inside will not format. Also check that you used one tilde on each side; ~~two~~ shows extra tildes on WhatsApp.

Can I use strikethrough in my WhatsApp About?

Formatting codes do not work in the About field, but Unicode strikethrough does. Copy it from the tool above. Your About is limited to 139 characters, and each struck letter counts as two.

How do I combine strikethrough with bold or italic?

Nest the symbols: *~bold and struck~* or _~italic and struck~_. Open and close them in the same order, outer symbol first.
