Write it once, paste it anywhere
Build in public posts, release notes and weekly updates all share a shape: a few things done, a few still open. Writing that by hand means finding a box emoji, a tick emoji, and a way to cross text out in an app that has no strikethrough button. Here you type the list the way you would in a notebook and copy the finished version.

Indentation is kept, so sub-tasks stay under their parent. Blank lines stay blank, so you can group items into sections.

The heading line has no marker, so it comes out with an empty box. Delete the box after pasting, or move the heading out of the box and type it straight into your post.
Where each row works best
- X and Threads. The emoji row stands out in a busy feed. Keep the list short: struck letters use extra characters.
- LinkedIn. Either row works. The plain boxes look calmer next to long text.
- Discord and Slack. Both support
tildesnatively, so the Markdown row also renders, but the emoji row looks the same for everyone, including in notifications. - GitHub and Notion. Use the Markdown row. The boxes become real checkboxes you can tick later.
Other list styles
For a list with no done or open state, the Unicode bullet point generator swaps hyphens for arrows, sparkles, check marks or circled numbers. For the Markdown syntax itself, see strikethrough in Markdown.
Questions people ask
How do I mark an item as done?
Start the line with [x], ✓ or ✅, or wrap it in double tildes like ~~this~~. Any line that is already crossed out with strikethrough characters counts as done too. Everything else is treated as still to do, whether it starts with [ ], a hyphen, a number or nothing.
Will the checklist look the same on X and LinkedIn?
Yes. The boxes are emoji or Unicode symbols and the line through done items is a combining character, so nothing depends on the app supporting formatting. The emoji row looks the most colourful; the plain boxes row looks the same on every phone.
What is the Markdown row for?
GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian and many issue trackers understand task lists written as - [x] and - [ ]. That row keeps the syntax and wraps done items in ~~tildes~~, so they render as real tickable checkboxes with a line through them.
Does strikethrough count against the character limit?
On most platforms each struck letter counts as two characters, the letter and its line. A 20-letter done item uses about 40. Pick a platform under Posting to and the counter shows whether the list still fits.
Can I cross out a single word instead of a whole line?
Yes, on the main strikethrough generator. Type your post, highlight the word and press Strike selection.
